In 2007 for the celebration of the company's 30th anniversary Joseph McKinstry Construction Company donated all of the labor necessary for the construction of the pedestrian bridge at the Madrona Woods Restoration.

Joe McKinstry is an active and dedicated member of the Seattle community.
He served as president of the Mount Baker Community Club from 1989 to 1991, acting as volunteer community coordinator for the reconstruction of the arsoned Mount Baker Community Clubhouse in 1992.
Often accompanied by his family, Joe has served as house leader for numerous Habitat for Humanity Jimmy Carter Work Projects both nationally and internationally.
He chaired the Building Green Task Force for the Seattle and South King County Habitat for Humanity affiliates.
He has served on the Board of Directors of the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Seattle Affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, Epiphany School in Seattle, and as Chairman of the Capital Campaign for the University of Washington Libraries.
In 2001, Joe, and his wife, Jill, established the Joseph and Jill McKinstry Libraries Endowed Fellowship at the University of Washington. This endowment encourage students from diverse backgrounds to explore careers in academic librarianship.

Childhaven is the only nonprofit organization in King County dedicated to the mission of healing young and vulnerable victims of abuse while breaking the cycle that leads to more hurt, more trauma. To encourage and support underrepresented students from Native American, Hispanic American, African American, Asian American and Hawaiian/Pacific Islander heritages who wish to pursue a career in academic librarianship, donors Jill and Joe McKinstry created the Joseph and Jill McKinstry Libraries Endowed Fellowship.
The McKinstrys wanted to create a diverse learning environment within the UW Libraries and encourage students, particularly those from underrepresented populations who were accepted by the ISchool, to consider working in an academic library after graduation.
Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County is a non-profit housing organization. Established in 1986 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Habitat for Humanity of Seattle/South King County works in partnership with people from all walks of life to build decent, affordable homes for families in need.
